ABOUT MATT
Matt is a composer passionate about many different genres of music. His career in music began with both saxophone and piano at a young age. While playing in his jr. high school jazz ensemble he developed an interest in the art of improvisation and turning ideas into music.
Throughout junior high and high school, Matt enjoyed composing and arranging music for student ensembles using various music notation and DAW software.
Matt went on to attend Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts from which he graduated in 2017 with a B.A. in Music. He spent his entire collegiate career performing as a member of Boston College’s jazz ensemble where he played lead tenor sax and was a member of the executive board. He also played in the marching band where he learned to play sousaphone.
After taking a few Japanese courses in college, Matt developed a broader interest in Japanese culture which had originally come from video games. With a desire to experience Japan first-hand, he decided to move there after college and spend 2 years teaching English in the countryside of Yamagata Prefecture. There, he had the opportunity to perform with various musicians and work with students while exposing himself to new styles of music and instruments. He continues to draw musical inspiration from his intercultural experiences and passion for Japanese culture.
